In 2007 Dr. Jubenville and Dr. Benjamin Goss founded the Journal of Sport Administration and Supervision. From the outset and still today, the vision remains the same. We seek to be a distinctive open-access research outlet that impacts the sport industry through a phenomenological approach to academic knowledge. To that end, the role of research in the sport management program at MTSU aligns with that of the mission of the JSAS in that the program has established lines of research with graduate students and faculty who aim to develop, advance, disseminate, promote, and preserve knowledge within the academic discipline of sport management by focusing on research that is both grounded in academic theory and driven by the needs of practitioners and the environment of the sport industry. Research in the sport management program will be advanced by four primary drivers. Phenomenology The program will shift research focus in the academic field of sport management toward a more precise study of distinct phenomena, ideas, and events. Development of the Scholarly Sport Practitioner (SSI) The program seeks to be a channel of pragmatic information that encourages practitioners in the sport management field to champion ethics and pioneer innovation by helping create a greater understanding of the applicability of sport management research to their organizations, job duties, and skills. Development of Social Responsibility in Sport Organizations and Stakeholders The program seeks to understand and to publish research that will enable sport organizations and stakeholders to better understand and function in their roles within sport, one of society’s more prominent, preeminent, pervasive, and powerful social institutions. Open Access Both student and faculty research will be eligible for publication in the Journal of Sport Administration and Supervision, the official publication of the Middle Tennessee State University Sport Management program. In order to fulfill the mission driver of open access, JSAS will work in concert with the University of Michigan Library’s Scholarly Publishing Office (which will house the journal) in order to disseminate research knowledge in a format that is readily and globally accessible to scholars, practitioners, students, media, and the public.
