Jubenville Provides Insight to Success of Online Sportsmanship Platformcspr_logo_type

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.-After more than a year of design, development, and analysis, the Center for Sport Policy & Research (CSPR) at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) has released the findings of the pilot program it developed on behalf of the Sun Belt Conference's Real Sportsmanship initiative.

Dr. Colby B. Jubenville, professor of sport management at MTSU and CSPR director, announced the findings of the online, interactive, reality-based educational program.

"While the issue of sportsmanship is by no means a new one, our study represents the first effort we know of to use a systematic, scenario-driven approach that provided coaches and student-athletes opportunities to educate themselves about on- and off-the-field issues related to sportsmanship," Jubenville said.

By Ken Sugiura, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The third-floor weight room rumbled and shook.

Young men in gray T-shirts and blue shorts hoisted barbells weighed down with 45-pound discs, sweat dripping off their foreheads and soaking their shirts. When they completed their sets, they dropped the barbells onto padded mats, causing the room to tremble.

In their midst, Ken Coggins shouted in staccato bursts.

"Work! Dominate! Get to work!" barked Coggins. "C'mon, work!"

Nashville Business Journal Features Dr. Jubenville PDF
News - Industry News

Spotlight Forty under 40 40u40headshot

Colby Jubenville is an associate professor for MTSU, director of the university's Center for Sport Policy and Research and publisher of the Journal of Sport Administration & Supervision. He is coordinator for the graduate sport management program, which has grown from four to more than 130 students in the past decade. In May, he launched a weekly radio show with Micheal Burt that focuses on leadership and life skills.

What would you tell other younger business leaders to do to find success? When I talk to young people I use Thoreau's definition of success. He positioned success as advancing confidently in the direction of your own dream to endeavor to live a life that only you can imagine. When I reflect on my own experiences that is exactly what I have done and what I tell others to do. This process begins with each person finding their unique voice.

What is the biggest challenge you are currently facing? Focus and follow-through are the two biggest challenges I face every day. I have written down my dreams and base every decision I make on those dreams. What I continue to do is wake up every day and stay focused on the dream and follow through with the decisions I make.

A story like this illustrates that sometimes the game can be the most powerful teacher for us all. - Dr. Jubenville

When losing a golf tournament really makes you a winner

By Shane Bacon, Yahoo! Sportsyahoo_story

There are times to be competitive. Moments when all you want to do is humiliate your opponent as you defeat him. It's the nature of sports, and what our internal competition meters usually read.

That, we all know, is how athletes feel most of the time. But, at times, and these are few and far between, we see acts that defy wins and losses. A moment when a girl is brought in on crutches to score a layup to break a record or someone being carried around the field after she twisted her ankle rounding the bases. Opponents coming together to transcend the game.

That is what happened between two collegiate golfers, vying for a spot in the NAIA National Championship.

Grant Whybark (left), a sophomore at the University of St. Francis, had locked up a spot in nationals with his team, which won the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, but was in a playoff against Olivet Nazarene's Seth Doran (right) for individual honors.
